Small metal nails are hard to see on asphalt or concrete pavement, which is why it’s easy for them to get embedded in tires. The nail itself might plug the hole temporarily, but air will eventually start to escape. That’s why you should address the issue as soon as it’s on your radar. To handle the situation quickly and safely, follow these steps.

3 Steps to Take When a Nail Is Stuck in Your Tire

1. Resist the Urge to Pull It Out

When you see the shiny nail poking out of the rubber, resist the temptation to touch it. Doing so could do more harm than good — you could create an opening in the seal for air to escape. This increases the risk of a blowout while driving to the tire repair shop.

2. Check for Changes in Tire Pressure

tiresEven if the nail is embedded deep in the rubber, you should still check the tire pressure. This will alert you to any leaks you haven’t noticed. If the gauge reading is considerably low, replace the damaged tire with the spare before you head to the tire service center. This will eliminate the likelihood of a blowout during the journey.

3. Find Out Whether Tire Repair or Replacement Is Necessary

When you get to the service shop, technicians will inspect the tire to determine the best solution. If the damage is minimal, repair specialists should be able to fix it. If moisture has gotten into the hole, it might have corroded the steel belts inside. In this case, a technician will recommend replacement.
