For seafood lovers, crab often ranks at the top of the list. If you’re not familiar with the different species you can order at a restaurant, get to know the flavor profiles of some of the most popular in the guide below.

Which Crab Should You Order When Dining Out?

1. Dungeness Crab

The Dungeness crab is sourced from a spit of the same name in Northwestern Washington. Its distinct flavor is both salty and sweet, which makes it a favorite among seafood lovers. In general, the higher the saline levels in the water where this crab is caught, the saltier the flavor profile will be. The claws and legs tend to be the tastiest portions. These crabs can grow up to three pounds in weight and 10 inches in width.

2. Snow Crab

seafoodCompared to the Dungeness, the snow crab’s flavor is much sweeter and more delicate. If you’re new to seafood, this is a good primer. Snow crabs have softer shells, making them easier to crack open. It’s common to serve just the legs and claws. This species is found along the Pacific coast all the way up to Alaska.

3. King Crab

Mostly found around the coast of Alaska, king crabs live up to their names. Some can have a leg span as long as five feet with a shell width of a foot across. Diners savor the soft texture and buttery flavor. The most meat can be found in the legs.
