To keep everyone on the road out of harm’s way, drivers must remain alert behind the wheel. Distractions can cut short response time, increasing the risk of accidents. That’s why many states have laws regarding driving distractions. If you’re driving in Arizona, knowing what types of distractions could land you in legal trouble, as outlined below, will help you avoid costly fines, court fees, and the need to hire an attorney.

What’s Considered Distracted Driving?

Bullhead-City-Arizona-attorneyPeople often use their vehicles for more than just transportation. Fixing makeup in the mirror, eating, turning around to reprimand kids, looking out the window at billboards, and any additional activity other than driving is considered a distraction. Although these behaviors are all strongly discouraged, hand-held cellphone usage is the only illegal distraction under Arizona law. Passed in April 2019, Arizona is the 48th state to ban using hand-held devices while operating vehicles.

What Are the Consequences of Distracted Driving?

The law regarding hand-held cellphone usage while driving will not go into full effect until January 2021. When it does, however, first-offense violations will come with a fine between $75 to $149. Offenders will have to pay between $150 and $250 for repeat offenses. An attorney can work with you to get the fine reduced if necessary. Drivers will not be ticketed for using the hands-free setting on their phones.
