During hot summers, your air conditioning system is under strain as it works to keep your home cool. Although equipment and air flow problems can arise during this time of extended use, proper AC maintenance will prevent breakdowns and loss of service. Your summer air conditioning repair and cleaning routine should always include these five steps.

Your Summer AC Maintenance Checklist

1. Change the Filter

Your air conditioner’s air filter needs to be changed every one to three months. To check if your filter is clogged, hold it up to the sun or a light fixture. If you can’t see through it, it’s full of dust and needs to be changed.

2. Clear Away Obstructions

AC MaintenanceThe outdoor air conditioning unit has vents around the exterior and needs to be able to release heat into the environment. Plants growing too close can clog it, and leaves and twigs can get stuck in the grating. Trim plants to leave some open space around the air conditioning unit, and keep them trimmed as summer continues.

3. Clean Vents

Your interior and exterior units need dust and grime cleaned from the vents to allow the best airflow. Your outside unit can usually be hosed down without much fuss. You can wipe down or dust the indoor unit, or if it's very dirty, you may need to wash it with water, too.

4. Clean the Drain Line

Your air conditioner's cold refrigerator coil collects condensation whenever it's in operation. Usually, this condensation is caught by a drip pan and disposed of through a drain line inside the air conditioner. During your summer AC maintenance, open the unit and check for anything blocking the drain line. You can also use a thin brush to clean it out.

5. Schedule Professional AC Maintenance

At least once a year, your AC unit should get inspected by a professional HVAC technician. They'll examine your system's components, perform preventive air conditioning repairs, and let you know of any developing problems. Annual maintenance prevents breakdowns and extends the life span of your unit, saving you money on premature replacements and major fixes.
