Cracks in your windshield are often unavoidable. Objects such as rocks and debris can suddenly slam into your glass and cause serious damage. However, there are some simple steps you can take to avoid future cracks after getting windshield repair or replacement.

1. Delay Car Wash After Windshield Installation

Water sprayed at high pressure can do serious damage to your new windshield after receiving auto glass repair. It can also prevent new moldings from setting correctly. Wait for at least two days to clean your car.

2. Keep Tape on Windshield

windshield-repairWindshield repair tape is applied to the edge of a new windshield to keep its moldings in place and ensure the best seal. Make sure to leave the tape on for two days. This will help you make sure you aren’t decreasing your windshield’s lifespan.

3.  Park in Safe Spots

To avoid additional windshield repair, avoid parking under trees and direct sunlight. Falling branches can easily damage your new windshield. Direct sunlight will ruin the tint in your window, and it can also damage the windshield’s structural integrity. The heat can also cause cracks if you run the AC high after letting the glass bake in the sun. Always park in a parking garage if possible.

4. Replace Wipers Regularly

If your windshield wipers are in poor condition, they can damage the glass. Your wipers are made of metal, and they’re covered by a rubber section that cleans your window. The rubber wears off over time, which can cause the metal to seriously scratch the surface. Replace your wipers at least once a year to avoid this type of damage.

5. Clean Glass Often

Even if the windshield looks clean, it can still be covered with a film that can be hazardous when driving. Use quality cleaners to clean the glass on your windshield to ensure you get rid of all the dirt and grime on it. When you clean your car, make sure you always save the windshield for last. It’s equally important to keep both the inside and outside of the glass clean.
