Mechanics generally recommend having your oil changed once every 5,000 miles. However, this is a general rule that provides a wide range, so how do you know when you’re due? Your car and driving habits are unique, so you should adjust your oil change schedule based on those factors. Know what affects your oil usage and you’ll be able to determine the right schedule for you.

Factors That Determine Your Oil Change Schedule

1. Oil Type

There are two types of oil that your mechanic may use: conventional or synthetic. Conventional oil is the cheaper option when you go in for your change and is derived directly from crude oil. Synthetic oil is conventional oil that has been modified with advanced lubricants and additives. While synthetic oil costs more, it will last longer and perform better in cold temperatures. Your mechanic can tell you the expected life span of the oil you choose.

2. Length of Trips

This is because when you don’t drive for an extended time, your engine doesn’t reach the optimal operating temperature. The extra fluid spills into the crankcase and dilutes the fluid, so it will need to be replaced sooner.

3. Outdoor Temperatures

A cold engine dilutes the oil since it takes longer to reach the optimal temperature. As a result, colder outdoor temperatures mean you’ll need to get a change done sooner. If you live in an area with warm year-round temperatures or are driving in the summer, you can postpone your trip to the auto repair shop a little longer.
