Neon signs are an iconic presence in urban and rural landscapes across America. Crafted from glass tubes that are shaped into letters, they rely on an electronic current coming into contact with an electrode and moving through a gas. Here’s a closer look at this visually stimulating art form that’s been helping businesses prosper for decades.

A Guide to How Neon Signs Are Manufactured

Materials

Neon signs are made out of soft lead glass, which is easily bent and formed into the desired shape. The glass has iron electrodes inside each tube. Neon was once the only source of energy that illuminated signs; however, argon has taken the new spot, though it’s unlikely that “argon sign” will ever catch on in popular culture. Argon gas is ideal for modern sign illumination because of its non-reactive elements. Red and orange are the only two colors that use neon gas today.

Manufacturing

neon signsNeon signs endure a detailed manual process. The tubes are bent, electrodes are attached, and impurities are removed from the inside. Once these steps have occurred, gas replaces the air. Once the tube is clean and dry, it undergoes the process of being bent. The heated ribbon is used to formulate letters.

A fun piece of trivia: The artists who bend the hot tubes don’t wear gloves to protect their hands. In order to know when they need to bend the glass, they must feel the transfer of heat and softness as a result. A tool called a blow hose is used to ensure the soft glass doesn’t collapse. This short and flexible hose is then used to blow air back into the tube to reform its shape. If the diameter doesn’t meet the proper measurements, the light will have restrictions on its overall functionality.

Once the tube is cool, gas is pumped into it at a low pressure to ensure there are no operational problems. After this, the aging process begins. Aging allows the gas inside the tube to become stable and run efficiently.
