Flossing is an essential part of dental care and unfortunately, something many patients forgo. Traditional floss can be cumbersome, and it’s important to realize that there are easier options available. Whether your kids need an alternative or you’re looking for a solution, consider the following options to combat plaque and decay-causing bacteria.

How to Make Flossing Easier

1. Interdental Brushes

Interdental brushes are a product people who have received orthodontic treatment will be familiar with. They consist of a wand-like stem with a forked end. A piece of floss is tied between the fork. The tool allows you to easily slip the length of floss between each tooth to loosen food and clear plaque. Interdental brushes come in a variety of sizes for patients of every age. Ask your dentist for a demonstration during your next dental care checkup.

2. Water Picks

The wand is easy to maneuver, which is especially helpful for children or senior patients with issues like arthritis, and the pressure can be adjusted for sensitive gums or handling needs. Some studies report that water flossers are more effective than traditional floss.

3. Floss Picks

Floss picks work similarly to interdental brushes but are thinner, more portable, and often disposable. A thin length of floss can be sawed between each tooth and when moved up and down, will scrape plaque from the surfaces. They’re a great on-the-go flossing alternative. Make sure children never share floss picks, however, as they’ll transfer bacteria.
