A spare tire can be a lifesaver if you have a blowout on the highway, especially if you’re stranded miles from the nearest service station. However, the small spare in your trunk isn’t designed to run for thousands of miles like its full-size counterparts. It will quickly wear out after a few days of use. Knowing what spare tires are for and when you should invest in a new tire can prevent an accident or other dangerous roadside emergency.

How Long Should You Drive on a Spare Tire?

A few decades ago, it was common for cars and trucks to come with a full-sized spare tire just like those already on the wheels. However, as manufacturers introduced smaller vehicles, they often transitioned to the smaller “donut” spares normally used today. However, some SUVs and trucks still feature full-sized spares, which will last longer than the small donuts.

Full-Sized Spares

tireIf your vehicle has a full-sized spare, you may be able to keep driving on it if it was included in your regular tire rotations. However, if it’s significantly less worn than your other tires or a different type altogether, the spare could make your vehicle more difficult to control. In these instances, it’s likely best to replace the tire as soon as possible.

Small Donut Spares

Any late-model vehicle smaller than a truck likely comes with a safe-saving donut tire. These spares are designed to get you to the next tire center, not endure months of regular use. While your manufacturer may have different guidelines, most donuts are only good for approximately 70 miles. Because they’re smaller than the other tires, you also shouldn’t go more than 55 miles per hour when driving on a donut.
