There are few feelings like the freedom and exhilaration that come with cruising the streets on a beautiful summer day while riding a motorcycle. Before you can hit the open road, though, you need an endorsement on your Ohio driver’s license or a motorcycle license. Once you’ve familiarized yourself with all the motorcycle parts and learned the basics of riding, take these steps to become a legal rider.

How to Obtain an Ohio Motorcycle License or Endorsement

1. TIPIC

Before you obtain a full endorsement, get a temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC). Go to any driver exam station in Ohio to take the knowledge exam as well as a vision test. Study the basic operation procedures and various motorcycle parts, and familiarize yourself with Ohio’s motor vehicle laws. Also, bring your U.S. birth certificate or passport, Social Security card or W-2 form, and proof of residency. Once you pass the tests, your TIPIC is valid for a year.

2. Practice

3. Skills Test

When you feel confident in your riding abilities, the next step is scheduling and passing the skills test. Before going, take care of any necessary motorcycle repairs and services. The instructor will inspect turn signals, lights, and tires before the exam starts. They’ll then ask you to perform various maneuvers and demonstrate adequate knowledge about the bike’s operation and various riding laws. If you pass the test, you can head to your nearest BMV office to receive your license or endorsement.
