5 Family Dentistry Survival Tips for the Summer, Anchorage, Alaska

With the kids out of school, summer is the perfect season for enjoying quality family time. Whether you’re holding a cookout in your backyard or going on a beach vacation, activities outside are enjoyable for all ages. However, your outdoor fun can take a toll on your teeth if you aren’t careful. Follow these five teeth cleaning tips to keep your loved ones’ smiles shining all summer long.

5 Tips for Summertime Dental Care

1. Don’t Forget Sunscreen

During the summer, the sun is stronger, and the days are longer. This increases your exposure to ultraviolet rays. Without protection against the sun, you run the risk of getting a sunburn. Purchase a sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 or higher. If you’re going swimming, make sure it’s water-resistant, and reapply after swimming for an hour or so. Even your lips are susceptible to sunburn, so use a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher.

2. Beware of Pool Water

3. Wear Mouth Guards

A pickup game of basketball of flag football is a great way to stay active and have fun as a family. Unfortunately, an elbow or ball to the face can crack, chip, or even dislodge teeth. Get custom-made mouth guards for optimal protection.

4. Be Smart About Hydration

Hot weather will make you sweat more, especially if you’re active. Drink around 2.7 liters (for women) or 3.7 liters (for men) of water per day to avoid dehydration, and make sure the kids are doing the same. Steer clear of sugary juices and sodas, which increase the odds of cavities.

5. Maintain Oral Hygiene When Traveling

You likely have some sort of family trip planned this summer, whether it’s a weekend at Grandma’s or a camping excursion. Set an example for the little ones and maintain your brushing and teeth cleaning habits on the road. If kids are heading off to an overnight camp without you, remind them to stick to their regular brushing schedule.
