For a long time, it was considered conventional wisdom that drivers should carry out an oil change either every three months or every 3,000 miles, whichever came first. However, as engines and oils have become more efficient, experts now recommend waiting closer to 5,000 or even 7,000 miles before considering changing your oil. However, there are certain factors that can necessitate more frequent changes. Here are three of the most important ones.

Situations That Require Earlier Oil Changes

1. Short Trips

You may need oil changes more often if you mostly take trips 6 miles or fewer at a time. The problem with shorter trips is that your engine never has time to reach its ideal temperature; as a result, water and acid stay present in your oil, ultimately encouraging the liquid to start coagulating. The thicker liquid that results isn’t as effective at lubricating your engine. As a result, you’ll need to get an oil change earlier than you usually would.

2. Tough Drives

oil-changesWhen your vehicle has to work a lot harder on a constant basis, it can take a toll on the engine, causing it to create high heat and taint the motor oil. That situation is common when you’re doing a lot of towing work or if you frequently find yourself on rough roads, all of which will increase engine stress. If any of these conditions apply to you, you’ll likely need to seek out oil changes more often.

3. Hot & Polluted Areas

Since a hot and hard-working engine can make it tougher for oil to properly lubricate it, it’s not surprising that drivers who live in especially warm climates will have to head to the auto shop more often for oil changes. It’s also worth checking on reports of air pollution in your town, since areas with higher pollution tend to saturate motor oil with particles, rendering it less effective much more quickly.
