Most people know that crosses and angels are symbolic of Christianity. However, there are a number of other symbols that are commonly used on headstones and grave markers, and their meanings may not be as obvious. Here are several popular ones to consider.

8 Headstone Symbols & Their Meanings

1. Alpha & Omega

Alpha and omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, respectively. When combined together into one symbol, they are typically meant to represent Christ. In Revelation 22:13, the Bible says, "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.”

2. Anchors

HeadstonesIn ancient times, the anchor symbolized safety. Christians sometimes use the anchor as a hidden cross symbol. If you see a headstone with an anchor, it may mark the grave of a seaman or a person who enjoyed boating.

3. Birds

Birds are one of the most common symbols found in cemeteries. Doves, which are found on both Christian and Jewish graves, are symbols of resurrection and peace. Ascending doves represent the journey to heaven. Eagles on headstones represent power and immortality.

4. Celtic Cross

This symbol is a cross combined with a circle. Catholics call it the Irish cross. It symbolizes eternity and is often used on the graves of priests and monks.

5. Dragonflies & Butterflies

Dragonflies symbolize immortality and regeneration. Butterfly symbols on headstones often have similar connotations. However, some people use butterflies to represent a life cut short.

6. Grapes

Grapes or a grapevine on a grave marker may be representing the blood of Christ—the Sacrament. However, they could also be a symbol of prosperity and fertility.

7. Oak Leaves

Oak leaves and acorns are also common. The leaves represent strength and honor, while the acorn is a symbol of everlasting life and immortality.

8. Palm Branches

Palm branches and leaves typically represent victory and joy. They may also reference Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
