If you’re on vacation in Hawaii, you’re probably going to spend plenty of time outdoors as sunny days at the beach are a hallmark of any getaway. However, before you head out to soak up some rays, be prepared to avoid an unpleasant sunburn. Here are a few tips to help you protect your skin while enjoying all of the outdoor fun that the islands have to offer.

3 Steps to Avoid Sunburn While on Vacation in Hawaii

1. Use Eco-Friendly Sunscreen

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to shield your skin from UVA and UVB rays. Apply it liberally at least 15 minutes before sun exposure to allow your skin to absorb the formula. Don’t forget to put it on your ears and hands, and ask someone to help you cover your back. Reapply every two hours, especially if you’re sweating or swimming.

Additionally, make sure it’s an eco-friendly product as some formulas contain chemicals, like oxybenzone and octinoxate, that are toxic to aquatic wildlife, including the coral reefs.

2. Wear Protective Clothing

vacationWearing layers and covering your skin will protect you from the sun’s harmful rays. Even if you’re spending a day at the beach, protect your skin by wearing a cover-up or wrap when you aren’t in the water. Wear long, light, and loose-fitting clothes that cover your skin while allowing airflow to prevent overheating. Also, be sure to use sunglasses with UV-resistant lenses and a wide-brimmed hat for added protection.

3. Avoid Peak Hours

Generally, the sun’s rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. To avoid getting a sunburn on your vacation, try indoor activities during this time, like shopping or lei making. If you want to be at the beach or poolside when the sun is its brightest, consider bringing an umbrella to provide shade.
