If your old air conditioning unit makes unusual noises, leaks fluids, or is near the end of its lifespan, you’ll likely start browsing the market for a new one. As you search for a replacement, there are several important factors that will help ensure you get the most out of your investment. Here are four aspects to consider in a new HVAC system.

4 Factors to Consider When Buying a New HVAC System

1. Type

HVACThere are several different types of HVAC systems. Traditional central air conditioning units are among the most popular since they tend to cool homes evenly. Ductless mini-splits, however, are usually better for cooling smaller spaces, since they don’t require the installation of ductwork.

2. Energy Efficiency

Inefficient HVAC units are notorious for wasting energy and driving up energy bills. The easiest way to judge efficiency is to check the unit’s Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (also known as its SEER rating), as established by the U.S. Department of Energy. Invest in a unit with a SEER rating of at least 13.

3. Size

Air conditioners drive up energy bills and fail to cool homes when they’re sized inappropriately. When choosing an HVAC system, remember that each ton cools approximately 400 square feet. In other words, if your home is 1,600 square feet, you’ll need a four-ton unit.

4. Warranty

It’s always a good idea to purchase an HVAC system with a generous manufacturer’s warranty. Ideally, the agreement should cover at least a portion of the cost of repairs and replacement parts for its entire lifespan. Some system warranties will only cover components for several years after their purchase, while others will offer lifetime warranties that cover components as long as they remain in the home.
