Headstones are used to memorialize loves ones and mark their resting place so people can pay their respects. As you begin designing a grave marker for a loved one, you’ll likely have many questions about what your options are and what to expect. Here are a few common ones people ask.

A Guide to Headstones

Are there any restrictions?

Before you start designing the marker, research the cemetery’s rules. Each location will have its own restrictions regarding the type of stone, colors, and sizes you can use. Show these restrictions to the monument designer so they can follow them.

What do grave markers typically include?

headstonesWhat you include will depend on how much space you have and what’s meaningful to your family. Generally, include the full name, date of birth, and date of death. You can also add an epitaph, etched symbol or photo, or prayer.

How do companion memorials work?

A companion memorial is a marker for more than one person. Traditionally, a husband will be on the left and the wife on the right, when you view the marker from its foot. These stones are usually larger, as they will include information about two people. Etch the information for both individuals and leave the death date blank for the companion who has not yet passed.

Can I pre-order one?

Yes, many people choose to pre-order their monuments when they preplan their funeral arrangements. This ensures your wishes are met and relieves the burden of designing it correctly from your family. You can also assume the financial responsibility for the marker, providing a gift to your loved ones.
