Polished concrete flooring is among the most reliable and attractive options for commercial facilities. Trusted for its durability and stain resistance, this material provides a low-maintenance alternative to hardwood and terrazzo. A key reason for its longevity is its intricate installation process. To prepare you for your upcoming flooring appointment, here are the steps that go into making concrete polished and smooth.

Steps to Creating Polished Concrete Flooring

1. Grinding

To achieve the signature smooth finish of this flooring, contractors must first go over the concrete surface with the appropriate grit. The standard starting point is 30 grit, which prepares the area for polishing. During this step, the flooring installation team will go over the surface at least three times to ensure all imperfections are fully removed. Running over the surface at 70 grit will remove any remaining scratches. A single 120 grit pass may be performed afterward. The floor is vacuumed after each grit upgrade to ensure that it’s ready for the next step.

2. Applying Surface Densifier

A chemical hardener, or densifier, is applied to the concrete at this stage. The substance hardens the surface to prevent issues such as staining and moisture infiltration. After approximately half an hour, the excess chemical product is removed and the remainder is left to cure for one to two days, depending on the size of the space.

Polished concrete achieves its glossy appearance during this step, which involves using a resin-bonded diamond mixture to bring out the shine. It begins with a 200-grit pass, which creates a simple, smooth finish with little to no shine. Commercial clients often opt for the next stage, a 400-grit pass, to achieve a bright, non-slippery surface that provides excellent light reflectivity. An 800-grit pass elevates this effect. Some clients may prefer a rich, mirror-like shine that appears wet, which requires at least a 1500-grit.

4. Using a Protectant

Clients often invest in stain-resistant products that sink into the surface to create protective barriers. This will prevent dirt, debris, and moisture from penetrating the concrete. Especially popular in commercial and industrial settings, this substance should be reapplied every six months to maintain its efficacy.
