Although you might not realize it, rain gutters sit at a slight slope. The angle ensures the water will move towards the downspout. If the slope is too steep, for example, water could shed from the channels too quickly, and the force with which it comes out of the downspout could cause erosion to the surrounding soil. To prevent this and other problems, here’s how to check for alignment issues.

4 Steps to Rain Gutter Alignment

1. Find Out the Correct Level

In addition to steep slopes, the gutters shouldn’t be too level either. This causes water to collect instead of flowing through the fixture. Runoff weighs down the channels, causing them to sag and eventually buckle under the pressure. The system is designed to hold a specific volume of water per section. Check the manufacturer’s website or reach out to a gutter repair specialist for guidance on what pitch is best for your specific gutters.

2. Observe Water Flow

Simulating rain will make it easier to tell which areas are too steep and too level. To check the flow, pour a one-gallon bucket of water into the highest point of the system. Follow the path of the liquid, making note of any areas where the water moves slower, faster, or seems to settle. You will need to concentrate your alignment efforts in these spots.

3. Identify the Reason for the Problem

rain guttersUnless rain gutters were installed incorrectly, there’s probably another reason for faulty alignment. If water won’t shed properly after a storm, high-speed winds might have knocked sections out of place. If trees near the house aren’t pruned, the branches could extend over the roof, resting on the top of your house, including parts of the gutter system. Without routine gutter cleaning, debris can collect and weigh down the channels, pulling apart sections at the seams. Once you identify the issue, you can take steps to avoid future problems.

4. Realign the Gutters

To restore proper alignment, it might be possible to screw in loose fasteners and gently force sections back into position. Conduct the water flow test again to determine whether the former problems are resolved. If not, there could be rust or other buildup to blame. In this case, you might want to upgrade the rain gutter system.
