When it comes to auto repairs and maintenance, most drivers understand the importance of scheduling a tire rotation or getting an oil change. However, other parts and systems also require some care and attention. As part of the engine system, the timing belt should be on your vehicle maintenance radar.

What Is the Timing Belt?

The timing belt is located toward the front of the engine and is responsible for rotating the crankshaft and camshaft. The timing belt ensures that these two components are kept in sync so that the engine’s cylinders fire when they are supposed to.

auto repairTiming belts are found in most cars and SUVs and are made from nylon-reinforced rubber. This rubber belt utilizes rigid “teeth” that help it attach to the camshaft and crankshaft. However, because of the rigorous work the timing belt performs each time you drive your car, it experiences gradual wear and tear and will eventually need to be replaced.

When Should You Replace the Timing Belt?

Most auto manufacturers provide recommended guidelines for replacing the timing belt, but a few other troublesome signs can indicate the need for a replacement. Common symptoms include a ticking sound coming from the engine, engine misfires, or a leak of oil or water from the front of the vehicle. If the timing belt breaks, additional auto repairs may be needed, as this could damage internal engine gears. When the timing belt breaks, you won’t be able to start your engine at all and will need to be towed to a mechanic.
