The world of sanitation has evolved drastically over time. When it comes to outdoor waste disposal today, the most common types are latrines, outhouses, and port-a-potties. If you are looking to learn more about outdoor sanitation, the following is a guide to the differences between these three popular options.

Latrines

While the word "latrine" can be used for a standard indoor toilet, this terminology usually refers to ground-based receptacles. Typically, a pit or trench is dug out of the soil as a place to dispose of waste. Throughout history, latrines were used as communal toilets, sometimes with stone seating and benches to fit multiple individuals at once. In modern times, they're more often associated with emergency or military scenarios to remove waste as efficiently as possible.

Outhouses

Outhouses are quite similar to latrines but they have the added benefit of privacy. The unit consists of an enclosed structure, usually made of wood, with a pit inside. In most cases, a bench with an opening in the middle is placed on top of the pit for seating. Unlike a port-a-potty, only the shell of the system is portable. When the pit is full, the exterior housing can be moved to a new location with a fresh pit, or the waste can be pumped out like a septic tank.

Port-a-Potties

port-a-pottyUnlike latrines and outhouses, portable toilets are designed with health and safety in mind. All waste is collected and removed regularly, preventing any unsanitary substances from entering the soil and contaminating the ground and nearby water. Port-a-potties are made from heavy-duty plastic, so they are resilient and easy to clean and sanitize. Many models also offer the convenience of a stand-up urinal, flushing capability, and wheelchair accessibility.
