With plenty of woodland and trails for riding, Alaska has some of the highest rates of all-terrain vehicles (ATV) in the nation. Whether you’re a longtime rider or heading to the ATV dealer for the first time, understanding the rules of operating one in your area will ensure you stay safe and avoid fines. To help you enjoy your vehicle this season, here’s a guide to some of the regulations for ATV riders in Alaska.

ATV Policies in Alaska

1. Registration

While recreational vehicles are not required to have titles in the state of Alaska, they do require registration. Any three- or four-wheel vehicle with low-pressure tires must be registered. After leaving the ATV dealer, you can acquire a two-year registration for a nominal fee through your local Department of Motor Vehicles.

2. Insurance

ATV insurance is not legally required in most cases, unless you own a recreational vehicle with a lien. This is because all Alaskan banks require insurance to insure the full value of vehicles on which a loan has been taken. If you plan to pursue financing options through your ATV dealer, factor an insurance policy into your budget as well.

3. Operating Age

ATV riders must be at least 16 years of age. With that being said, there are youth models available for younger people. A driver’s license is not required to operate an ATV.

4. Restricted Riding Areas

atv dealerRiders must be cautious about traveling only on lands open for public riding. This includes unregulated public land, which is replete in the state of Alaska. Nonetheless, it’s important to stay off of private property if you haven’t been granted authorization, as well as federally owned land like national parks.

5. Roadway Riding

Alaska does not permit ATV riding on public roadways. However, road crossing is permitted, and riders may also operate ATVs on streets where off-highway traffic is allowed. If weather conditions like snow make roadways inaccessible to other vehicles, ATV riding is also accepted.
