Shower doors are perfect for creating an open, sophisticated atmosphere in a bathroom. When smudges, soap scum, and other grime accumulate, however, they can quickly become an eyesore. Soap scum is an issue every homeowner will face, and luckily, it’s easy to manage. There are a number of cleaning approaches to take—most of which can be created with common household products.

How to Remove Soap Scum From Shower Doors

1. Ammonia

Ammonia is a proven cleaning agent you’ll find in most homes, and it’s extremely effective for removing soap scum. Pour one part ammonia into a spray bottle and dilute it with three parts water. Set the sprayer on the “mist” setting and wet the shower door. You can then use a coarse, glass-friendly brush to break up soap scum. You can wipe it away or rinse it off the surface once it’s loosened. Keep your ammonia-water cleaner around; you can use it to clean other surfaces around your home.

2. Baking Soda

For tough soap scum buildups, mix baking soda and sodium borate—commonly known as Borax. Combine with water to create a paste. You can then apply it to the shower door to loosen the soap scum. Wipe or rinse it away and dry the surface after to remove any lingering particles and prevent streaks.

3. White Vinegar

Start with a hot shower. The heat and steam will help first loosen the soap scum. Then, spray a must of undiluted white vinegar on the shower door and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. After, apply baking soda to the vinegar. Scrub as the solution fizzes and add more baking soda as needed. Avoid using vinegar alongside chlorine-based bleach cleaners, as these can be toxic when combined.
