A summer home is an excellent place to relax and have fun during the warmer months of the year. If your summer house uses a residential well as the main water source, it’s important to maintain it—including working with a water well service—to ensure the water remains clean and accessible. Below are a few steps to get started.

How to Maintain a Residential Well

1. Run All the Faucets

The first few times you use your summer home for the season, turn on all the taps and run the water for at least five minutes. As well water sits for extended periods, sediment builds up, which can cause unappealing odors and tastes. Running all the faucets flushes out the system, cleaning out the water.

2. Test It for Contaminants

In general, if the bacteria or nitrate content of the water is over 10 milligrams per liter, the well should be serviced by a professional.

3. Keep Chemicals Away From the Well

Pesticides, fertilizers, and other toxic chemicals should never be put in the ground around or near a water well. Before using any chemicals on the lawn of your summer home, read the packaging labels carefully. If they warn of contamination when applied near water sources or areas prone to water runoff, avoid using these substances. If you’re ever in doubt, contact the National Pesticide Information Center.
