Summer is the time to soak in the sun. However, while the sun may be invigorating, its UV rays can negatively affect your health—in particular, your eyes. Invest in your eye care: learn about the sun’s impact on ocular health and what you can do to protect your vision.

What Eye Care Problems Are Linked to UV Exposure?

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration occurs when a small segment of the retina, known as the macula, is damaged. Without a functioning macula, you can’t properly process light, which leads to severe vision loss. This damage is usually associated with aging, but can also occur as a result of excessive UV exposure.

Photokeratitis

Photokeratitis describes the condition where prolonged sun exposure burns the outer layers of the eye. Although relatively rare, this temporary condition can cause extreme eye pain and redness.

Cataracts

Unprotected UV exposure can cause oxidative stress within the eyes, prompting proteins to form and clump in the lens. As they group together, the proteins will form a cloudy film. Over time, this cloudiness can contribute to vision loss.

How Can You Protect Your Eyes in the Sun?

eye careWhile UV exposure presents many ocular health risks, you don’t have to stay indoors all the time to maintain good eye care. Instead, protect your vision by wearing sunglasses that block both UV-A and UV-B rays. If you usually rely on prescription glasses or contact lenses, ask your optometrist about prescription sunglasses that can keep you safe while allowing you to see clearly.

In addition to wearing sunglasses as a preventive measure, visit your optometrist about once a year—or as otherwise recommended—for an eye exam. During this check-up, your provider will screen you for vision problems, including ones related to sun exposure. If problems are caught early, treatment can be provided to offer relief, restore your vision, or prevent the condition from worsening.
