Pizza is as American as apple pie. Whether you want a classic cheese pie from the local pizza place or a pepperoni deluxe, there’s something for everyone. Below, learn some facts you can use to wow the guests at your next pizza party.

4 Fun Facts About Pizza

1. The $12,000 Pie

Whether you’re purchasing a frozen pizza for five bucks or a hot, loaded pie for $25, you know the cost can range. Have you ever considered the most you’d pay at your local pizza place? One of the most expensive pizzas on record cost $12,000. You can purchase this pizza with a 5-figure price tag in Salerno, Italy. Topped with caviar and lobster, this isn’t your typical pepperoni pie.

2. Delivery to Spacepizza place

Pizza can be delivered just about anywhere, even space. In 2001, the Russian Space Agency had a 6-inch pizza delivered to the International Space Station for Yuri Usachov, a Russian cosmonaut. This was the first pizza delivery recorded in space.

3. The First Online Order

Thanks to the Internet, online orders are prevalent in almost every industry, and pizza is no different. When you can’t make it to your pizza place, the Internet has your back. In 1994, pizza was one of the first recorded online purchases. Since then, pizza pies are ordered online by the thousands each day.

4. Where Frozen Pizza Was Born

If you walk into any grocery store today, you’ll find frozen pizza options of all varieties. This all started thanks to Rose Totino, a Minnesotan woman credited as the first person to commercially sell a frozen pizza in 1962. Pillsbury later purchased the brand in 1975, and they still make frozen pizza to this day.

Whether you’re visiting or live in Gulf Shores, AL, Papa Rocco’s is sure to be your go-to pizza place. Since the 1980’s it has been the perfect spot for pizza, oysters, and drinks. They’re open daily until midnight with happy hour running Monday to Friday from 11 A.M. to 7 P.M. You can view Papa Rocco’s menu online and like them on Facebook for updates on drink and meal deals.
