When you have a paving project in the works, your two main choices are typically asphalt and concrete. While these two materials are durable, they’re not interchangeable. In fact, although they’re similar, they have many differences. Below is an explanation of how asphalt and concrete differ and why asphalt is often the better choice for your project.

The Difference Between Asphalt & Concrete

Concrete is a mixture of water and aggregate (typically stone and sand) bound together with cement powder. Asphalt is comprised of a mixture of aggregate and bitumen, which is a sticky, black form of petroleum. Both require time to cure after pouring before you can drive on them, and both require a foundation of compacted gravel. However, asphalt is a shiny black when first laid, while traditional concrete is available in several colors.

The Pros & Cons of Different Types of Paving

PavingAsphalt paving is more flexible and considerably less expensive than cement concrete, and many people feel the shiny, black color is more aesthetically pleasing. On the other hand, concrete is the more durable material. A concrete driveway can last up to 40 years while an asphalt one might last only 20 years. However, asphalt repairs are easier and less costly than concrete, and you can quickly resurface an asphalt driveway in a way that is not easy with concrete. Moreover, you can extend the lifespan of asphalt by having it sealed about six months after installation, and resealing it every three to four years, depending on how much wear it receives.
