If you own a well, it’s possible for iron to seep into your water supply through chemical and natural means, leading to undesired results. Fortunately, there are many water treatment options that will give you clean water for drinking, bathing, and cooking. To learn more about how iron can permeate your water supply and how to address this issue, here’s a helpful guide.

Dealing With Iron in Your Water

How Does Iron Get Into Well Water?

Iron can get into water through seepage or corrosion. When precipitation seeps through the soil, it enters your water supply. While this is a natural process, it leads to undesirable effects if the soil contains iron, as this mineral can dissolve and mix with the water. Corrosion, on the other hand, occurs when water and oxygen mix and come into contact with iron inside your pipes. Over time, unwanted rust can form, and flakes can travel up into your drinking water.

What Are the Effects of Iron in Your Well Water?

water-treatmentDrinking iron isn’t dangerous to your health, but it can impart an unpleasant, metallic taste in your food and drinks. In addition, when iron mixes with your water supply, it can lead to clogs in your drainpipes. This can damage your entire plumbing system and require costly repairs. Iron in water can also stain your dishes and laundry when you wash them.

How Can You Treat & Prevent This Issue?

There are several different water treatment methods to address iron. For minimal iron build-up, water softeners are designed to remove minerals that create hard water.  An oxidizing filter is designed to remove naturally occurring iron and manganese from water. During this process, soluble forms of iron and manganese are converted to their insoluble forms and then removed by filtration. Aeration works by adding oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from the water. This can increase the water’s palatability by removing its unpleasant taste. Chemical oxidation works by adding chlorine or hydrogen peroxide, which oxidizes and destroys the iron. Once chemical oxidation has been performed, a water filter treatment will remove hydrogen peroxide and chlorine from the water.
