Encouraging original, creative thinking can not only make life more enjoyable for your little one, but it can also boost their emotional and psychological well-being. Creativity provides tools for expression, problem-solving, and innovation that they can use now and in the future. Here are some guidelines to encourage your child’s creativity using arts and crafts time.

Do:

Choose materials wisely.

Provide your child with plenty of arts and crafts materials so they can express themselves without too much structure. For example, instead of coloring kits with specific directions, give them a blank sketchbook with colored pencils and crayons. Costume materials and assorted arts and craft supplies such as sequins, glitter, and construction paper can enhance the creativity experience, as your child will select various materials to create a portrait.

Encourage creative play.

arts and craftsChildren learn a lot through play, and playtime is a fantastic opportunity to encourage creativity and imagination. Whether they’re scouring the backyard for buried treasure or putting on a play with their stuffed animals, imaginative play can boost creative thinking. Dress-up, sing-alongs, and make-believe are all fun and expressive pastimes for encouraging creativity.

Don’t:

Be commanding.

While it’s part of a parent’s job to guide their child, it’s essential not to be bossy. Give your child some freedom and autonomy so they can discover their individuality. Don’t make them color in the lines in a coloring book if they stray away. If you’re building a science model such as the solar system, let them figure out how to put the pieces together.

Limit creativity to art class.

Art lessons can be beneficial, mainly if your child is interested in learning a specific technique such as painting or pottery. However, the best lessons in life often occur outside the classroom. Encourage your child to express themselves creatively in daily situations as well. For instance, you might ask them to draw pictures of the animals or plants they see while going for a hike or bike ride, or have them make crafts to observe holidays and seasons.
