Since summer temperatures are here, you’re relying on your air conditioning system more and more. Having an efficient system and getting prompt HVAC repairs if needed are both key to keeping your utility costs manageable all season long. Fortunately, there are simple ways you can boost the efficiency of your system.

A Guide to Improving Efficiency

1. Uncover Vents

Often furniture gets placed over or in front of vents, blocking the air flow. The obstruction stops that area of the house from getting the cool air it needs, while forcing the system to work harder since air isn’t flowing freely as it should.  Walk through the house and move armchairs, sofas, and blinds away from all vents. Dust them off if needed.

2. Program Your Thermostat

A programmable thermostat can save you a lot of money and energy with no residual effort required. Have your HVAC contractor install one and program it. Set it to rise to the low 80s during the day while everyone’s away and again at night when your family’s asleep.

3. Use Window Coverings

To prevent your home from turning into a greenhouse, close the blinds or curtains on those windows. You can still enjoy cool natural light by opening the curtains for windows that aren’t getting direct sunlight.

4. Avoid Using Appliances

Don’t use your heat-producing appliances during the hottest hours of the day, which are typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. These hours may vary slightly depending on when the sun hits your house. Turn off any machines, such as computers, when they’re not in use; though individual difference they make can be small, the cumulative effect can be substantial. Wait to do your laundry or cooking until later in the evening when the heat created won’t be such an issue.
