3 Auto Parts You Can Replace on Your Own, Morehead, Kentucky

As a car owner, you’re responsible for properly maintaining your vehicle. This care makes a huge impact on road safety. However, you don’t have to bring your car to a mechanic at the first sign of trouble. In some instances, it’s perfectly safe for you to replace select auto parts on your own. Here are three parts that are DIY-friendly.

3 Auto Parts Drivers Can Safely Replace

Morehead, KY auto parts1. Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are among the most important parts to replace. They wear out after approximately six months of regular use. Instead of hiring someone to finish this quick job, you can do it yourself by lifting and detaching the blades. You do not need any tools to complete this. Check how the wipers are connected to the arms so that you can easily apply the new set. Make sure they’re properly aligned and flush to the arms. Test them at least once before use to ensure they are secure.

2. Air Filters

It’s imperative to replace the air filter at least once every year, or each time you surpass 12,000 miles. The filter improves your fuel efficiency and protects the engine by preventing potentially harmful debris from settling onto its delicate parts. This rectangular part is typically situated next to or near the front of the engine and held in a black case with metal clips. You might need a screwdriver to unscrew the plastic lid. Take note of how the filter is positioned inside, then remove and replace it with a new one. Latch the clips back on to lock it in place.

3. Battery

It may seem daunting to change the car battery on your own, but it’s among the most common and straightforward auto parts to replace. This should be done at least every five or six years to ensure your safety on the road. In order to do this job, you’ll need to invest in a set of wrenches from the hardware store. You may also want to wear gloves, as sulfate buildup from an old battery can burn the skin. The battery is situated on the side of the engine and will usually be in a box-like contraption. Pay close attention to the order of cables as you remove and replace them. Detach the black negative cable first. When you put the new battery inside, replace that negative cable last. This will prevent a possible short circuit. Make sure that you purchased the correct replacement battery for your model.
