When you decide to plant a pollinator garden, there are a lot of factors to consider. You want a landscape design that attracts bees and butterflies, and helps support their work. But what kind of plants should you use? Where should you put it? Fortunately, the tips you need to plant a successful pollinator garden are easy to find.

3 Methods for Attracting Pollinators

1. Native Plants

Since you’re trying to support pollinators locally, you need to choose plants the local species will like. Usually, there is a local or state nature society that can provide you with a list of suitable native plants. Pick a variety of plants. Some plants may only offer food, but not shelter, and vice versa. It’s also helpful to learn about sources from which you should get the plants. Some landscape design and garden centers may use pesticides on their plants, and this can harm local pollinator populations more than help them.

2. Know the Workings

You want to make sure you provide food for adult pollinators to harvest, but also plants that pollinators can lay larvae in. There should also be ample water, and the area should be clear of any pesticides or spraying. A healthy habitat is key. Leaving some decaying leaves or grass at the site will encourage nesting.

3.  Pick the Right Site

Look for the sunniest spot in the yard, with a lot of direct exposure. Examine the type of soil you have. Is it full of clay or relatively dry? This will determine what can realistically grow there. Moisture levels should be rich, but not too wet, and shelter from the wind will encourage pollinators to come.
