Summer is the time for outdoor activities and bonding with family and friends. However, these seasonal pastimes can put extra strain on your septic system. Keep these tips in mind to maintain your system throughout the summer.

3 Summer Septic Maintenance Tips

1. Make Sure Your Guests Know What to Flush

Septic tanks have no trouble processing human waste and toilet paper, but anything else will decrease the efficiency of the system. Whether your guests are staying for one night or a couple of weeks, let them know not to flush sanitary pads, tampons, cotton swabs, diapers, or anything else down the toilet. You may want to put up a reminder sign above the toilet.

2. Park Guests Away From the Septic System

3. Choose New Plants Carefully

Summer might be the ideal time for a landscaping project, but those new plants or trees can ruin your septic system. Always keep trees or deep-rooted plants at least 30 feet away from the septic system, and don’t plant anything but grass over the tank itself.
