A funeral is a profoundly personal and deeply moving experience. This is true for cultures all over the world, no matter what kind of rituals they employ when holding a service for a loved one. The following are three types of funeral services that illustrate how different cultures choose to honor their loved ones.

Tibetan Sky Burials

funeral serviceAlso known as a celestial funeral, Tibetan sky burials have their roots in Buddhist principles. When a person passes, their body is laid to rest in a home for up to five days. Unlike Western funeral services, the body is not preserved. On a day chosen by the family, the body is then taken to a celestial burial platform in the mountains where it’s devoured by vultures. Remains are then burned, while monks perform special prayers and chants to help the soul on its journey to paradise.

Maasai Predator Burial

The Maasai are East African nomads known for their distinctive way of dressing and many lively customs. They’re also well known for their pragmatic view on funeral services. While high-ranking people within the tribe do receive burials, overall the Maasai choose not to bury their dead. They believe that once a person dies, they cease to be. They don’t believe in an afterlife and feel that burials are actually harmful to the earth. Instead, they allow the bodies of the deceased to be consumed by predators.

Ghana Fantasy Coffins

In the West African country of Ghana, people believe that their ancestors simply transition to a spirit realm upon death. Fantasy coffins are the chosen conveyances for their journey, and coffins are often designed to reflect what the person hopes to achieve in the afterlife. They can be constructed to look like luxury cars, animals, boats, and virtually any other object that holds meaning to the deceased. Fantasy coffins are also meant to bring honor upon the deceased’s remaining family members.
