It’s no secret that humans and their canine companions can form deep, lasting relationships with each other. But, is it possible for dogs to form similar relationships with each other? Whether your pooch met a new four-legged friend at the park, dog day care, or the neighbor’s yard, scientists and trainers alike believe dogs can be just as close and affectionate with each other as you are.

The Science Behind Dog Friends

Although we tend to think dogs truly love us unconditionally, scientists were convinced our relationships with them were born mostly out of a need for food. In other words, your pup’s instinct to eat is the main reason he hangs out with you so much. But a study published in Nature hoped to prove this theory wrong. In the experiment, a dog was given the option to provide another pooch an empty bowl or one filled with food. However, the donor dog was not rewarded with a treat in either case.

The results? Most dogs chose to give their buddies the bowl with food, but gave those they weren’t familiar with the empty bowl. Similar to human behavior, it’s not uncommon for dogs to have preferred companions.

How Can You Tell If Dogs Are Close?

Dog day careDogs that are physically close and play with each other while ignoring larger groups are good friends. You may also notice your pooch sharing toys and food with others at home or in dog day care.

Are there any benefits of dogs having a best friend? Similar to our benefits of a relationship with them, dogs with friends can reduce stress and anxiety in each other. So if your pooch is alone for long periods, consider adding a buddy to your home.
