Summer is all about soaking up rays thanks to the long days and bright sun. While you’re probably quick to put on sunscreen to safeguard your skin, protective eye care likely isn’t foremost in your mind—but it’s just as important. Review why it matters and what you can do to protect your vision below.

Do:

Wear sunglasses.

Ultraviolet rays from the sun can burn your eyes, causing a condition known as photokeratitis. Prolonged exposure to UV rays also increases your risk of age-related eye conditions like macular degeneration and cataracts. Get sunglasses with full UV protection to avoid issues.

Use goggles for swimming.

Don’t:

Rub your eyes.

Rubbing your eyes is an easy way to transmit bacteria and grime to your sensitive ocular area. In summer, when you're spending more time outdoors and getting your hands dirty, the risk increases. As much as possible, avoid touching your face; you don't want sand from the beach or soot from a campfire in your eyes.

Forget your eye care kit.

If you’re taking a summer holiday, make sure you have eye care necessities like contact lens solution readily available. Pack such items in your carry-on bag if you’re flying; you’ll still have them even if your checked bag is lost or delayed. Since hot summer air can exacerbate dry eye, it’s also smart to keep artificial tears on hand.
