Childproofing your home is essential for protecting little ones from harm and preventing a call to an electrician for repairs. With so many options — and so many outlets and cords to cover — it may seem like a time-consuming and expensive job, but it isn’t. Here’s a quick guide to childproofing your home’s electrical hazards.

3 Ways to Childproof the House

1. Cover Outlets

The cheapest solution is a plastic cap inserted like a plug, blocking little fingers or small objects from being inserted. For a few dollars, you can ensure every outlet in your home is safe. However, these caps can be a hassle if you need to use a blocked outlet. As an alternative, use covers that screw onto the outlet and automatically push to the side when you insert the blades of an electrical plug. They’re easy to install, so there’s no need to call the electrician to do it for you.

electrician2. Tape Down Cords

Cords are tripping hazards, and one tumble can bring the item attached to the cord down, too. Using gaffer tape to secure cords to the floor is an easy way to keep little feet from tripping over them. Unlike duct tape, it won’t leave sticky residues.

3. Shorten Long Cords

No matter their age, kids tend to be drawn to cords; they pull, bite, and trip over them, which can cause injury. To prevent this, reduce temptation by shortening cords. Roll and knot them, or buy special containers that contain and condense them. This helps reduce tripping hazards, too, minimizing the disarray on the floor.
