If you recently got a new pup, you’ll need to put in time and energy into puppy training. There are some important commands that every dog should know. If you start training the core commands early—as soon as you bring them home—you will ensure that they’re well-behaved as they grow up.

Essential Puppy Training Commands

1. Sit

Sit is a good command for getting your dog to calm down or wait to be ready for another command. Teach it using a treat or toy as a reward. Hold it in front of their nose until you get their attention, then slowly move it up and back. As their nose follows the treat, their back end will hit the ground. As soon as they do, say “good” and reward them.

2. Stay

dogThe stay command can keep your pup safe as they wait patiently for you. Start small by having them stay in one spot for a few seconds with you right in front of them. Then, slowly increase the amount of time they have to stay, as well as the distance between you and them.

3. Come

This puppy training command ensures you can always have your dog at your side, and it can save them if there’s an unfriendly dog or a car heading their way. This is most easily taught with two people inside the home. You should each call the dog back and forth between the two of you. Slowly increase the distance, then move outside and start the process again. Keep in mind that getting your dog to come to you at home is very different than having them come to you in public, where there are a lot of distractions.

4. Drop It

This command is useful if your dog has an item in their mouth and you want them to let it go. Pick up a toy and encourage them to play. Once they grab it, continue holding onto it. Eventually, they’ll lose interest and let go. Say “good” and reward them by giving the toy back.
