As you browse the market for homes, you’ll need to inspect the properties that most interest you. In addition to checking the roof, foundation, and electrical system for signs of damage, it’s also important that you have a professional check for plumbing problems. Even when you’re just taking a preliminary tour, however, there are red flags that you can identify and use in the event you want to make an offer. Use the following guide as you explore potential properties.

4 Plumbing Problems Homebuyers Should Look For

1. Nonfunctional Toilets

As you walk through homes, test the toilets to make sure they flush. Unless you already plan to remodel the bathrooms, there’s no reason to spend money to replace broken toilets or parts. If they don’t operate properly, request that the seller to either fix them or use this to negotiate the asking price down.

2. Broken Faucets & Shower Heads

If the flow seems weak, keep in mind that low water pressure can sometimes indicate larger problems like a failing pressure regulator or old, corroded pipes. If the water has an unusual color or odor to it, have it tested for hard minerals and contamination.

3. Water Heater Issues

You’ll also want to make sure the home receives a steady supply of hot water. Test all fixtures to see how hot the water gets. Take a look at the water heater itself, and check for signs of damage, such as dents, rust, and unusual sounds like knocking or banging.

4. Pipe Problems

Look in closets and beneath sinks for the pipework. Check what they’re made of, look for rust or other damage, and ensure they’re fitted properly. If the property you’re hoping to buy is older, watch out for galvanized metal or polybutylene pipes, both of which are prone to deterioration. Polybutylene will typically be marked with the letters PB, while a magnet will stick to galvanized steel.
