During the summer, it’s important to keep your house cool and comfortable. As your air conditioning works hard to maintain the temperature, you should ensure that your system receives the care it needs to operate properly. The following AC maintenance tasks will ensure that it works efficiently, saving you on repair and cooling costs.

A Guide to AC Maintenance

1. Check the Coolant Line Insulation

Freon®, or refrigerant, is what provides the air conditioner’s cooling power. However, outside forces can reduce its efficiency. Occasionally check the coolant lines that run from your outdoor condenser unit to the house. Inspect the insulation for signs of wear or damage, and replace the insulation if necessary. If you notice a refrigerant leak, don’t try to fix it yourself. Get a professional to repair the damage and recharge your system, as Freon exposure can be hazardous to your health.

2. Change the Air Filters Regularly

AC maintenanceHVAC air filters are found in the intake vents located inside the home. These vents are where the system draws in air to be cooled by the air conditioner unit. Filters protect your system from dirt, dander, and debris, but over time, excess buildups will decrease air quality and strain your cooling system. Filters should typically be replaced every 90 days, but homes with pets or individuals who suffer from asthma should replace them monthly.

3. Keep the Condenser Unit Clear

The outdoor condenser plays a vital role in keeping the air conditioner functioning properly, but it can have issues due to excessive exposure to leaves, dust, and other debris. Keep your condenser clean by trimming away any plants that could obstruct its airflow, removing accumulated dirt from the fins with a soft brush, and using a commercial coil cleaner to flush the condenser coil.
