Welcoming a kitten into your home is an exciting experience. As you get to know your furry friend, consider scheduling an appointment with a veterinarian early to evaluate their development. You can also discuss pet vaccines and preventative care with your vet. Below is a guide on what a first-time cat owner should know about pet vaccines to ensure your feline friend lives a long and healthy life.

Understanding Pet Vaccines & What Your Kitten Should Get

Core Immunizations

Kittens should receive two primary vaccines in their early months. The first, FVRCPPet Vaccines, protects against feline rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and feline panleukopenia. This vaccine is administered in three shots, with the first around 6-8 weeks of age and boosters at 12 and 16 weeks. The rabies vaccine should also be administered as early as 12 weeks.

Recommended Pet Vaccines

In addition to rabies and FVRCP immunizations, veterinarians encourage cat owners to consider FeLV, the vaccine that protects against feline leukemia. Deciding if this shot is necessary depends on your cat’s lifestyle and if they’ll come in contact with other cats that might be infected. Veterinarians will test the kitten for leukemia before administering the vaccine.

Other recommended immunizations include Chlamydophila felis and feline immunodeficiency virus, or FIV. To determine whether your cat is a candidate, talk to your veterinarian about your kitten’s daily routine. An outdoor cat in contact with other cats is a strong candidate for these options.

Additional Pet Care Needs

Beyond pet vaccines and boosters, cat owners should schedule annual wellness exams at their local animal hospital to evaluate general health. Cats should also receive flea prevention medication and should be spayed or neutered.
