Cataract surgery is a routine procedure that in most cases, is an outpatient surgery. It’s one of the most commonly performed operations in the United States. If you’re considering having the procedure, below are the most frequently asked questions about cataract surgery.

Cataract Surgery Questions

What causes a cataract?

Cataracts are a clouding over of the lens of the eye, which occurs because of the build-up of natural proteins. They form as part of the aging process, and there is no known form of prevention at this time. Surgery is the only form of removal.

Are cataracts serious?

cataract surgeryCataracts may be present for years before they impact your vision. They become serious when they obstruct your sight. However, the removal of cataracts via surgery is generally safe. Many cataracts will never need to be removed if they don’t affect your vision.

How does the surgery work?

Your doctor will make a tiny incision on the front surface of the eye, either with a scalpel or laser. The lens of the eye is broken into small pieces by ultrasound or laser and removed through a hole cut into the anterior capsule that encloses the lens. The removed lens is replaced with a clear intraocular lens that restores vision. Advanced technology lenses are available that correct issues such as astigmatism or presbyopia, relieving you of having to wear glasses or contact lenses. Healing takes just a few days.

What are the side effects of cataract surgery?

The risk of complications or side effects is very low with this procedure. However, as with any type of surgery, pain, swelling, redness, and infection are possible. Most can be managed with medication. The surgeon will go over any potential complications and make recommendations for pre- and post-operative protocols to make sure the surgery goes smoothly.

When should the surgery be avoided?

If you have macular degeneration or a detached retina, the cataract surgery will not positively impact your vision, and thus there is no reason to have it. Glaucoma, however, may be benefitted by the surgery as the doctor may also be able to perform a glaucoma surgery while removing the cataract. Prior LASIK patients may also successfully have cataract surgery.
