While you can cool off with a dip in the pool, the heat can be stressful for your lawn. A few issues to watch out for in July range from weed control to dry weather as well as increased insect activity. Below are a few lawn maintenance solutions that will ensure a lush and healthy lawn throughout the summer.

What to Expect From Your Lawn in July

Potential Dryness

Some parts of North Carolina experienced a drought earlier this May. July might be a dry month as well. This will not only make weed control more difficult but can also potentially dry out your lawn. If possible, water your lawn between five a.m. and seven a.m. Wet leaves and over-watering can cause brown patch in your lawn. Watering the lawn in the morning allows it to evaporate faster, decreasing the likelihood of disease. When watering, make sure your lawn gets up to 2 inches of water a week. The water should penetrate the soil 4 to 6 inches below the deep root for optimal irrigation.

Weed Growth

Weed ControlWeed control is essential for a healthy lawn, especially in the summer. Inspect the area for grassy weeds. They will suck up the nutrients from the fertilizer and moisture from water. While the growth of fescue slows in the heat, weeds like crabgrass and dallisgrass thrive in it. Dallisgrass, in particular, grows quickly in dry weather, making weed control a priority.  They need to be spot-treated. The product used will turn the dallisgrass leaves white, which is a normal part of the process. Crabgrass and dallisgrass are persistent, making a second treatment in August necessary.

Increased Pests

Whether hosting parties or relaxing with your family, your lawn is a central part of your summer activities. It needs to look good and be comfortable. Without proper weed control, lawns are more prone to disease and insect infestation. Pests like mosquitoes, fire ants, fleas, and ticks are most active in the summer months. For Mosquitoes, be watchful for areas of standing water, where they can lay their eggs.  There are environmentally friendly insecticides available that will not damage your lawn.
