Following an at-home skincare routine can be extremely beneficial for the skin, helping to minimize fine lines and wrinkles, prevent sun damage, and promote suppleness and elasticity. But, with an abundance of skin treatment products and practices from which to choose, it can often be hard to know where to start. To remedy that, consider these do’s and don'ts of at-home skincare.

Do:

Moisturize—but in moderation.

A good quality moisturizer should be part of any home skin treatment regimen. But err on the side of using too little rather than too much. The skin can only absorb a limited amount of moisturizer, and what's left over ends up sitting atop the skin and clogging the pores.

Drink plenty of water.

Hydration is vital for healthy skin, ridding it of toxins, and helping it maintain a healthy glow. The skin, like any other organ, is made up of cells; since cells are primarily comprised of water, they need a regular intake of water to stay nourished. Aim to drink eight, eight-ounce glasses of water every day.

Don't:

Forget sunscreen.

skin treatmentNo matter the time of year, wearing sunscreen protects you from the sun's damaging ultraviolet rays. UVA and UVB exposure can cause any number of skin issues, from reduced elasticity, sunspots, and discolorations on the milder end, to skin cancer and premature aging on the more serious end. Buy skincare products with built-in SPF. When going out in the sun for any significant length of time, add an additional layer of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

Exfoliate too hard.

Exfoliation products are excellent home skin treatments that remove dead skin cells, keeping the face clean and soft and encouraging blood flow to give a more youthful appearance. Because exfoliators are meant to be at least somewhat abrasive, overuse can result in skin irritation and damage. You don't need to exfoliate any more than a few times a week.
