Nails in the roadway are not the biggest threat to tires. Low inflation can cause flat tires, blowouts, and tread to peel away, and at least 1 in 4 cars in the United States have at least one tire underinflated. Here are a few tips to keep your tires from going flat.

3 Tips to Avoid Flat Tires

1. Check Tire Pressure

Tires generally gain about 1 PSI (pound per square inch) per 10 degrees Fahrenheit increase in temperature. It’s best to check tire pressure in the mornings before the daily heat reaches the pavement. Throughout the day, as it becomes warmer, the air in the tire expands, increasing the overall tire pressure. Use a tire pressure gauge to ensure an accurate reading.

Often, the tire has already lost up to half its air before it’s visually apparent. Check the air pressure, including the spare, at least once a month. Don’t use the maximum pressure rating on the tire. This number represents the maximum safe limit for the tire, but it’s not the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Check the manual or the inward-facing surface of the driver’s door to find the manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure.

2. Avoid Bad Road Conditions

Flat TirePoor road conditions can cause several problems for tires. Sharp objects can puncture tires, and the impact of speed bumps and potholes can force air out of the tires. Safe driving is the best medicine when avoiding street hazards. Leave enough room between yourself and the drivers in front of you so you can foresee possible hazards.

3. Reduce Tire Wear

Tires will eventually wear down, and the tread will deplete, but safer driving habits can prolong the life of your tires. Proper tire pressure helps keep them in optimal shape, and rotating your tires- front to back- helps them wear more evenly. The main stress is on the front tires, so occasionally moving the rear pair to the front keeps all tires uniform. Also, look at a tire alignment when the tires are rotated. The alignment helps keep the tires balanced, and when you move the rear tires to the front, they may not be aligned properly.
