As temperatures soar this summer, you might be stocking up on sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats for the family. You’ll also need to protect your car from the same sunny days. If you’re hoping to avoid the hassle and expense of emergency auto services, use these maintenance tips to keep cruising through the summer.

3 Maintenance Tips to Help You Avoid Emergency Auto Service This Summer

1. Check Tire Pressure

In your car’s owner’s manual, you’ll find the tire pressure level in PSI recommended by your the manufacturer. While under-inflation can make your car more susceptible to punctures and hydroplaning, a tire may become over-inflated in the summer, as pressure rises alongside heat. If your tires are too full, you’re more at risk for a blowout, so keep an eye on their limit and relieve some pressure if temperatures are extreme.

2. Inspect Your Battery

auto servicesA car battery’s worst enemies are vibration—often the result of misplacement—and extreme temperatures. In some cases, the summer heat can speed up the rate at which your battery loses fluid and experiences oxidation, which may leave you broken down on the side of the road. Older or worn-out batteries are even more susceptible to heat death, so have yours inspected or changed this summer.

3. Monitor Fluid Levels

Under the hood of your vehicle, coolant lowers the temperature of all the fast-moving parts, which already operate at high temperatures. Motor oil and other fluids lubricate these parts to minimize the damage and heat caused by friction. If your car doesn’t have enough of these fluids to cool it down, your engine will work less efficiently and be much more susceptible to breaking down or seizing up. Pull the dipsticks out of the reservoirs to check on fluid levels and replace the low ones.
