Northern breeds, such as Bernese mountain dogs, Alaskan Malamutes, and Chow Chows, have gorgeous, thick coats designed for the cold northern weather. Because of their long fur, keeping them cool in the summer can be a challenge. Follow the grooming and care tips below to keep your pup comfortable through the hot days ahead.

4 Ways to Keep Your Cold-Weather Dog Cool in the Heat

1. Schedule Grooming

Summer grooming isn’t always as simple as completely shaving your dog, since this can leave them susceptible to sunburn. Instead, have your groomer remove a layer of their thick undercoat. Brushing them out every day will also keep that extra fur off your four-legged friend without leaving them exposed.

2. Keep Them Hydrated

Dogs rely on water to moderate their body temperature. Make sure that your dog always has access to cool water. The colder water will help lower their body temperature when they’re feeling overheated. If you leave the house together, bring a portable bowl and some bottles of cold water. Give them water about once an hour or whenever they start heavily panting.

3. Avoid Midday Heat

The sun is strongest between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M.. Plan your walks and exercise for the early morning or later in the afternoon when the sun is on its way down. The hot asphalt in the middle of the day can burn your pup’s paws. Protective socks and booties are another option to help prevent damage to the pads of their feet.

4. Swim

Getting your dog wet is an easy way to cool them down. If your dog spends time in the backyard, give them shade and provide a kiddie pool full of water for them to relax in. Take them swimming at the beach or enjoy other water related activities rather than going for your usual run or hike.
