Forklifts are dependable pieces of equipment that builders and construction industry professionals use to transport heavy loads. However, for these machines to be effective, the operator must understand the basics of using them safely. Whether you’re considering getting a forklift rental for a temporary project or are thinking of purchasing a fleet for your business, here’s what you need to know.

How to Use a Forklift Properly

Do:

Carry low loads.

No matter the weight of your load, carry it low to the ground to prevent potential injuries or damage to the forklift. Problems can happen if its center of gravity is thrown off by the presence of heavy weight at a higher elevation. As a result, the forklift runs the risk of turning onto its side. For your safety, always tilt the forks back before you move the machine.

Maintain the forklift.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires the device to be inspected every day that it’s used, including after each shift. Visually inspect it for signs of obvious damage, including leaks or tire problems. Test the lights, steering, horn, and parking brakes to ensure they all work properly. Check the fluids, including the hydraulic fluid, fuel, oil, and radiator water, and make sure that the forks move up and down smoothly.

Don’t:

Drive dangerously.

Operate your forklift rental just as you would a car—with caution. Driving at a slow pace will allow you to stop easily. As you approach an intersection, come to a complete stop so you can easily see others. If you’re on a busy job site, be mindful of fellow workers and pedestrians.

Carry too much.

Each forklift is designed to support only a specific amount of weight. Carrying more than the allowable capacity could prove hazardous. Not only can heavy weights alter the center of gravity and cause the forklift to tip, but they can also obstruct your view and make it difficult to see oncoming traffic and people.
