You throw many old, broken, and messy items into your trash can, so it isn’t surprising that it can become smelly. Although regular garbage collection removes the bin’s contents, filth may remain on the walls. Keeping a clean bin is extremely important, and it’s easy to maintain if you do it regularly.

A Homeowner’s Guide to Cleaning the Garbage Bin

Why a Clean Bin Is Important

If you take out a bag for garbage collection and notice a foul smell from your empty bin, it’s because it’s dirty. Liquid waste that leaks from trash bags can seep into the pores of the bin, while larger debris can get left behind on the interior walls and start decomposing. Washing your bin will eliminate the strong odor and keep stray animals, who are sniffing out a meal, off your property.

How to Clean It

After garbage collection, find an all-purpose cleaner or use a mixture of warm water and dish soap, and apply it generously to the inside and outside of the bin. Once it’s soaked with the mixture, sprinkle the inside of the trash bin with half a cup of baking soda to neutralize odors. Let the baking soda sit for 10 minutes while you wipe down the outside with a dry cloth. Once 10 minutes is over, scrub the interior and the lid with a sponge, using the rough texture to address stubborn residue. Use a garden hose to rinse the entire bin, then dry it with a cloth before putting it away.
