Once your last child leaves home, repurpose their old bedroom by transforming it into a study, home gym, craft space, or storage room. If you don’t want to give away the mattress, consider putting it into a storage unit. Here are some suggestions to make sure it stays safe.

How to Place Your Mattress in Storage

1. Clean It Thoroughly

Don’t retrieve a dirty mattress when you’re ready to remove it from the storage unit. Vacuum both sides and all the edges carefully. You can also use an upholstery cleaner or handheld steamer to minimize the presence of allergens for a deeper clean. Try not to soak the fabric, however, as any lingering moisture could turn the mattress into a breeding ground for mold.

Only proceed to this step when you’re sure the mattress is fully dry. Air it out for at least 48 hours, if necessary. To wrap it, use a plastic mattress bag. These are readily available at moving supply providers and home improvement stores. The bags are typically made with a heavy-duty plastic that prevents exposure to dirt, insects, dust, moisture, and debris while the mattress is in transit and when it’s finally in storage. Ensure the entire mattress is covered.

3. Position It Flat

It’s not unusual for people to slide the mattress into the storage unit on an edge. This, however, can damage the delicate coils and padding inside. Place it flat instead, and avoid putting anything on top to prevent sagging, denting, or movement of the interior components. Lay the mattress on top of larger items in the storage unit.
