Are there strange sounds coming from your car when you try to turn it on? If you think your car starter might be failing, you’ll want to take your vehicle to an auto repair shop right away. Recognizing signs of a problem can prevent further damage to your engine and possible breakdowns on the road.

Symptoms of a Failing Car Starter

1. Unresponsive Engine

When you turn your key in the ignition, you expect your car to start running. If not, you may have an issue with your starter. Try having another car give you a jump. If your car still doesn't start, you may have a problem with your battery or electrical components. Have your car towed to the closest auto repair shop and have them diagnose and resolve the issue.

2. Clicking or Grinding Noises

auto repairIf you hear a clicking sound when you turn the key in the ignition, your starter may not have enough electricity to operate. If your battery is not the issue, your starter may need to be replaced. Grinding noises are another issue in that they indicate the starter isn't engaging with the engine. If you hear either of these noises or any other unusual sounds from the ignition, ask an auto repair specialist if you need a new starter.

3. Smoke

The starter uses electricity to power your car. Like any electrical element, too much power can cause the starter to overheat, which can cause your engine to smoke. There may be an issue with the starter motor’s shut off mechanism or a failed connection somewhere in the engine, both of which can be detrimental to your car and dangerous for you if you continue to drive it, so contact an auto repair professional at the first sign of smoke.
